“Céline Struger’s sculpture "Muscle Memory" serves as an apotheosis of lying fallow, a monument to untamed wilderness. From a distance, it resembles a totem from a post-apocalyptic film, manifesting the animistic past of its surrounding landscape.
The title "Muscle Memory" refers to the memory or spirit of a place (Genius Loci) that is to be reactivated through an artwork. It simultaneously suggests that our perceptions of past or future civilizations are always influenced by the attitudes of our own time.
In relation to its location, "Muscle Memory" represents the link between a Terra Incognita and the current state of its surrounding environment. It is not an urban sculpture but one of the horizon and the open, expansive landscape. Its weathered steel body invites plants to entwine around it, while birds settle on its expansive snapping wings.”
